Firefighters battling a large forest fire on the Brocken mountain are hopeful for a change in weather that could bring rain by late Sunday evening.

The fire, which started on Friday at Königsberg, a subsidiary peak of the Brocken, has been contained but not yet extinguished.

Over 250 personnel, including support from neighboring districts and the Bundeswehr, are involved in the operation.

The use of helicopters and planes is at its maximum, with eight helicopters and four planes deployed.

The area remains closed to civilians, and residents nearby are advised to keep windows and doors shut due to smoke.

The situation is under control, but the fire's complete extinguishment depends on the anticipated rain and continued efforts by the firefighting teams.
