A fierce wildfire in the Harz region has led to the evacuation of approximately 500 people from the Brocken, a popular tourist destination.

The fire, which began at Königsberg, has merged into a large front, spreading uncontrollably.

Firefighters, numbering around 150, are battling the blaze with the aid of three aircraft and a helicopter, while additional helicopters have been requested.

The situation remains critical, with the fire not yet under control.

Authorities have closed the area, urging the public to avoid the vicinity to allow emergency services to operate effectively.

The wildfire risk in Saxony-Anhalt is currently very high, with recent fires occurring in the northern parts of the state.
