Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder has been hospitalized due to severe burnout, his lawyer confirmed.
The 80-year-old, who served as Chancellor from 1998 to 2005, is experiencing extreme exhaustion, memory issues, and sleep disturbances, according to his doctor.
Schröder recently canceled his appearance before a parliamentary inquiry into the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline, citing health reasons.
His family has requested privacy during this time.
Schröder, who has faced criticism for his ties to Russian energy firms and President Vladimir Putin, has been increasingly isolated politically.
Despite this, he remains a public figure, often appearing on social media alongside his wife.
The World Health Organization recognizes burnout as a serious health issue caused by chronic stress.
