SPD's Kühnert Steps Down for Health Reasons

Published: 2024-10-07

Kevin Kühnert, the Secretary-General of Germany's SPD, has resigned due to health issues.

In a letter to party members, Kühnert, 35, emphasized the need to focus on his recovery, stating he cannot currently meet the demands of his role.

His departure leaves the SPD without a key figure just a year before the Bundestag elections.

Kühnert, once a rising star in the party, will also not seek re-election in his Berlin constituency.

His resignation, while unexpected, follows speculation about his future amid the SPD's recent electoral challenges.

The party's leadership, including Saskia Esken and Lars Klingbeil, is expected to address the situation soon.
