German Ex-Prisoner Faces New Legal Battle

Published: 2024-08-23

Rico Krieger, a German national previously sentenced to death in Belarus for alleged terrorism, has been released as part of a prisoner exchange between Russia and the West.

However, his legal troubles are far from over, as Germany's Federal Prosecutor is now investigating him for allegedly causing an explosive detonation, a charge under Section 308 of the German Penal Code.

This accusation mirrors the charges he faced in Belarus, where he claimed he was coerced into confessing to avoid execution.

Krieger reportedly sought to join the Kastus Kalinouski Regiment, a Belarusian volunteer group supporting Ukraine against Russian forces.

Instead, he was allegedly recruited by Ukraine's SBU intelligence service, leading to his arrest in Belarus.

Krieger maintains his innocence, asserting he was unaware of the contents of a backpack he was instructed to place near railway tracks, which led to his arrest.

The investigation continues as authorities search for more evidence.
