German Parliament Tightens Rules to Curb Disruptive Behavior

Published: 2024-07-07

The German Bundestag is set to implement stricter rules to address the rising number of disruptive incidents, particularly from far-right AfD members.

The new measures, proposed by the governing coalition, will double fines for misconduct to 2,000 euros, with repeat offenses costing 4,000 euros.

Lawmakers who receive three warnings within three sitting weeks will face automatic penalties.

Committee chairs will gain more power to exclude disruptive members from sessions.

The changes aim to maintain decorum and strengthen parliamentary debate, allowing for more lively discussions through permitted interjections during current affairs debates.

While supporters view these changes as necessary, critics argue they may limit free speech in parliament.
