Germany Debates AfD Ban Amid Rising Tensions

Published: 2024-09-30

The debate over a potential ban on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has intensified in Germany, with political and legal experts weighing in on the issue.

SPD leader Lars Klingbeil emphasized that the decision to ban the AfD should be based on legal grounds, not political ones, and is currently in the hands of constitutional experts.

This comes as the AfD has been classified as a right-wing extremist group by the domestic intelligence agency in several states.

Meanwhile, a cross-party group of Bundestag members from the SPD, CDU/CSU, Greens, and the Left Party is preparing to submit a motion to the Federal Constitutional Court to declare the AfD unconstitutional.

However, within the SPD, there is resistance to this move, with some members arguing that it could backfire politically by driving more citizens towards the AfD.

The proposal requires substantial evidence to prove that the AfD systematically opposes the democratic order, a process that could take years and faces significant legal hurdles.
