German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach has appointed a special investigator to probe the controversial mask procurement deals made during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The investigation aims to shed light on potential oversights from the previous administration, particularly under former Health Minister Jens Spahn.
At the heart of the issue are masks purchased at high prices, with many payments still outstanding.
The government now faces lawsuits from about 100 suppliers, with claims totaling 2.3 billion euros.
Lauterbach emphasized the need for transparency, stating, 'If mistakes were made, they must be brought to light.
' The probe will examine why direct contracts continued to be signed even after a halt in the procurement process.
