Germany is set to implement new traffic regulations concerning cannabis use while driving, following the recent legalization of cannabis for adults.
Starting Thursday, a legal limit of 3.5 nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood will be enforced, similar to the 0.5-per-mille alcohol limit.
This change comes after the Bundestag and Bundesrat approved the law, which was signed by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
The new rules include stricter penalties for novice drivers and those combining cannabis with alcohol.
Violators could face fines of up to 500 euros and a one-month driving ban, with harsher penalties for mixed substance use.
Previously, any detectable THC level could lead to sanctions, but experts had advocated for a more reasonable threshold.
The new regulations aim to balance road safety with the rights of cannabis users.
