Germany is witnessing a concerning rise in knife attacks, particularly in train stations, prompting Interior Minister Nancy Faeser to propose stricter weapons laws.
The Bundespolizei reported 430 knife-related incidents in the first half of 2024, compared to 777 throughout 2023. Faeser aims to ban dangerous switchblades in public spaces and reduce the permissible blade length from 12 to 6 centimeters.
The proposed changes are part of a broader initiative to enhance public safety, with Faeser urging municipalities to establish more weapon-free zones.
The Bundesrat and police unions support these measures, emphasizing the need for swift legislative action.
Additionally, incentives for the voluntary surrender of dangerous knives are being considered to further curb knife violence.
