Germany's Fireworks Debate Ignites

Published: 2024-12-28

The sale of fireworks for New Year's celebrations has begun in Germany, with retailers expecting a 15-20% increase in demand compared to last year.

The industry, which generated €180 million in 2023, has shifted towards more elaborate fireworks like combination sets, now making up 50% of sales.

However, the excitement is met with growing concerns.

Authorities and activists warn of the dangers, including injuries, environmental damage, and strain on emergency services.

Last year, two fatal accidents highlighted the risks of mishandling pyrotechnics.

Many cities have designated no-firework zones near sensitive areas like hospitals and historic buildings, with fines reaching up to €50,000 for violations.

Calls for a nationwide ban on fireworks are growing, citing safety and environmental concerns.
