Germany's Heating Law Sparks Political Clash

Published: 2024-11-28

Germany's controversial Heizungsgesetz, or heating law, is at the center of a heated political debate.

The law, which mandates that new heating systems in buildings must use at least 65% renewable energy, has faced criticism for its complexity and lack of social support measures.

Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has come under fire for claiming that the SPD opposed social subsidies for heating system upgrades, a statement that SPD General Secretary Matthias Miersch vehemently denies.

Miersch insists that the SPD has always advocated for social justice in the law's implementation.

Meanwhile, Building Minister Klara Geywitz calls for a comprehensive reform to simplify the law, criticizing its bureaucratic intricacies.

Despite the political turmoil, the push for climate-friendly heating systems continues, with ongoing support for property owners to transition to greener technologies.
