Joel, an 18-year-old Ghanaian student in Hamburg, Germany, has been granted permission to stay in the country after facing deportation.
His classmates at the Nelson Mandela School launched a petition that garnered over 100,000 signatures, catching the attention of local authorities.
The Hamburg Hardship Commission unanimously decided in Joel's favor, recommending he receive a residence permit.
Joel, who arrived in Hamburg four years ago as an unaccompanied minor, has been praised by his teacher for his quick integration and academic dedication.
The decision prevents Joel from being separated from his father and sister, allowing him to complete his education in Germany.
