Historic Brombeer Coalition Formed in Thuringia

Published: 2024-12-07

In a historic move, the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) in Thuringia has approved a coalition agreement with the CDU and SPD, marking the formation of Germany's first "Brombeer" coalition.

The decision was made during a member assembly in Ilmenau, where 76 members voted in favor, 26 against, and two abstained.

The coalition, however, still awaits approval from the SPD's base, with a decision expected by Monday.

The CDU has already given its nod.

BSW leader Katja Wolf emphasized the party's commitment to bringing an East German perspective to the table and addressing issues like the increasing "war logic.

" Despite initial disagreements, particularly on topics of war and peace, BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht expressed satisfaction with the final agreement, highlighting the party's influence in the negotiations.

The coalition will hold 44 of the 88 seats in the Thuringian parliament, lacking an outright majority, which could lead to a stalemate with the opposition parties, the Left and AfD.
