Historic Coalition Agreement in Thuringia

Published: 2024-11-20

In a significant political development, the CDU, BSW, and SPD have reached an agreement on a coalition contract in Thuringia, marking a potential first for the so-called "Brombeer-Koalition" in Germany.

This agreement comes eleven weeks after the state elections, following intense negotiations influenced by BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht's demands on peace policies.

The coalition contract, which is set to be presented on Friday, includes ambitious projects in education, health, economy, and social development.

However, the contract still requires approval from the parties' committees, with the BSW planning a party congress on December 7 to discuss member approval.

The coalition, holding 44 out of 88 seats in the Thuringian parliament, will need at least one opposition vote to pass decisions, highlighting the delicate balance of power in the new government.
