Kretschmer Eyes New Coalition in Saxony

Published: 2024-09-10

In the wake of recent elections in Saxony, the political landscape is shifting as Minister President Michael Kretschmer of the CDU navigates complex coalition possibilities.

Kretschmer has firmly rejected a coalition with the Greens, citing their failure to resonate with voters in Saxony.

Instead, he is exploring a potential alliance with the newly formed Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), which garnered nearly 12% of the vote.

This move comes after a meeting with BSW leader Sahra Wagenknecht to discuss possible collaboration.

The CDU, having narrowly led the elections with 31.9% of the vote, is also considering partnerships with the SPD or the Greens to form a majority government.

However, Kretschmer has ruled out a coalition with the AfD and dismissed the idea of a minority government.

The discussions are ongoing, with Kretschmer emphasizing the need for local decision-making free from external influence.
