Kretschmer Secures Saxony Leadership

Published: 2024-12-18

Michael Kretschmer has been re-elected as Saxony's Minister-President in a tense second-round vote.

Despite leading a minority government with the SPD, Kretschmer secured 69 out of 120 votes, surpassing the required majority.

The BSW party, led by Sahra Wagenknecht, played a pivotal role by supporting Kretschmer after receiving assurances on key issues.

However, Wagenknecht clarified that this does not imply full support for the minority government.

The AfD largely backed independent candidate Matthias Berger, while their own leader, Jörg Urban, received minimal support.

Kretschmer emphasized the need for cross-party collaboration to ensure stability and progress for Saxony.
