Authorities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are investigating the mysterious deaths of 26 grey seals found along the eastern coast of Rügen.
The seals, discovered since early October, were in good health and well-nourished, with no visible injuries.
Initial autopsies suggest drowning as a possible cause, with water found in the lungs of some animals.
Experts suspect the seals may have become trapped in fishing nets, known as "Reusen," leading to their deaths.
The German Oceanographic Museum in Stralsund has filed a complaint against unknown parties, and investigations are ongoing.
The incident has raised concerns among environmentalists, as grey seals are a protected species, and their population, though recovering, remains vulnerable.
