A comprehensive study by the University of Osnabrück has revealed that over 400 individuals have been victims of sexual violence in the Catholic Diocese of Osnabrück since 1945. The report, commissioned by the diocese, suggests that the actual number of victims could be ten times higher.
The study highlights that 4.1% of the approximately 3,000 clerics in the diocese have been accused of such offenses, a figure consistent with findings in other dioceses both in Germany and abroad.
The report underscores a range of offenses from boundary violations to severe sexual crimes.
Despite some progress in addressing these issues, the support for victims remains inadequate compared to what state courts would typically award.
The diocese plans to address the findings and offer support through a dedicated hotline for affected individuals.
