Dominicus Meier has officially taken office as the new Bishop of Osnabrück, succeeding Franz-Josef Bode who resigned in March 2023. Meier, a former Benedictine monk and auxiliary bishop in Paderborn, was appointed by the Pope on May 28. His inauguration was marked by a festive service attended by around 600 guests, including prominent figures from politics and the church.
Meier emphasized the need for Christians to be attentive to the real concerns of others, urging them to act helpfully rather than engage in endless debates.
He faces significant challenges, including declining membership and a shortage of priests in the diocese.
Meier plans to start his tenure by engaging with communities across the diocese, focusing on personal interactions rather than formal meetings.
