Cem Özdemir, Germany's current Federal Minister of Agriculture, has announced his candidacy for the position of Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg.
This move comes as Winfried Kretschmann, the long-serving Green Party leader, steps down after 15 years.
Özdemir, whose parents were guest workers from Turkey, could become the first person of such heritage to hold this office.
His candidacy has been met with both support and skepticism.
While many within the Green Party see him as a strong successor due to his pragmatic approach and popularity, others point to challenges such as the Green Party's declining poll numbers and the unpopularity of the current federal coalition.
Özdemir's campaign emphasizes his deep connection to the region and his commitment to defending its democratic values against extremism.
