Scholz Faces Rising Populism Amidst Challenges

Published: 2024-09-05

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed deep concern over the growing support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, particularly in eastern regions like Thuringia and Saxony, where they secured over 30% of the vote.

Scholz attributes this rise to economic uncertainties, irregular migration, and the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

Despite the AfD's success, Scholz remains committed to supporting Ukraine with weapons while maintaining a cautious approach.

He also emphasized the need for Germany to manage irregular migration effectively, highlighting the importance of demonstrating governmental control over the issue.

Scholz's Social Democratic Party (SPD) suffered its worst electoral results in these regions since 1990, which he described as 'bitter.

' Despite the political turbulence, Scholz remains optimistic, focusing on long-term solutions and maintaining a calm demeanor during public dialogues.
