Alexander Schweitzer, the 50-year-old Social Democrat, is poised to become the new Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate, succeeding Malu Dreyer.

The state parliament in Mainz is set to elect Schweitzer, with the vote considered a formality as the 'traffic light' coalition holds 54 of 101 seats.

Dreyer, 63, is stepping down after 11 years, citing health reasons related to her multiple sclerosis.

Following Schweitzer's swearing-in, Dörte Schall will be appointed as the new minister for social affairs, labor, transformation, and digitalization.

Schweitzer has already expressed his intention to continue governing with the Greens and FDP after the 2026 state election.
