Supermoon and Comet Dazzle Night Sky

Published: 2024-10-18

On Thursday evening, skywatchers were treated to a rare celestial event featuring both a Supermoon and the comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas.

The Supermoon, appearing larger than usual, was visible as it reached its closest point to Earth, approximately 357,000 kilometers away, during its full moon phase.

This phenomenon, occurring every one and a half to two years, was best observed when the moon rose behind earthly objects, creating an optical illusion of increased size.

Meanwhile, the comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas, visible to the naked eye, graced the western sky.

Originating from the edge of our solar system, this comet may not return for a long time, making it a spectacular sight for observers.

The event was visible in various locations, including Munich, Thailand, and the Sahara Desert, offering a breathtaking view for those with clear skies.
