Thuringia Coalition Talks Hit Roadblock

Published: 2024-10-18

In Thuringia, coalition talks between the CDU, SPD, and the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) have hit a snag.

Despite presenting a 19-page exploratory paper earlier in the day, the BSW's state board has blocked further negotiations.

They demand a preamble in the coalition agreement addressing diplomatic efforts to end the Ukraine war and opposing the deployment of American missiles.

This unexpected move highlights internal conflicts within the BSW, particularly between party leader Sahra Wagenknecht and Thuringia's BSW chair, Katja Wolf.

The CDU and SPD have agreed to proceed with coalition talks, but the BSW's conditions must be met to finalize any agreement.

The parties aim to introduce a consultation process in the state parliament to secure legislative majorities, avoiding reliance on the Left Party's support, while ruling out cooperation with the AfD.
