Since the beginning of the year, the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia has implemented a mandatory work policy for asylum seekers, requiring them to perform community service tasks such as cleaning and gardening for 80 cents per hour.
This initiative, led by CDU district administrator Christian Herrgott, aims to integrate refugees into the regular job market.
While around 100 refugees have participated, with 20 securing employment, the policy has faced criticism for potential exploitation and hindering access to regular jobs.
Some refugees have refused the work, resulting in reduced social benefits, and a few have left the district or gone into hiding.
Despite the controversy, local authorities report positive feedback from both the community and the refugees involved, viewing the work as a step towards integration and skill development.
