German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has announced she will not seek the Green Party's chancellor candidacy for the upcoming federal election.
In an interview with CNN at the NATO summit in Washington, Baerbock cited the need for increased diplomacy in light of global crises, particularly the Russian war against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.
She emphasized her commitment to her current role, stating that these extreme times require her full attention as Foreign Minister rather than being tied to a chancellor candidacy.
Baerbock, who was the Green Party's first-ever chancellor candidate in 2021, assured that she would still support her party during the election campaign.
This decision potentially clears the way for Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck to become the Green Party's chancellor candidate.
