Germany's outgoing Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is set to take on a prominent role as President of the UN General Assembly for the 2025/26 session.
The decision, confirmed by the German government, replaces seasoned diplomat Helga Schmid with Baerbock, a move that has sparked debate.
Baerbock defended the nomination, emphasizing the General Assembly's growing importance amid frequent Security Council deadlocks.
Her appointment, expected to be finalized in June, highlights Germany's commitment to the UN and its bid for a Security Council seat in 2027/28. Critics, however, question the political nature of the decision and its alignment with feminist foreign policy principles.
Baerbock's tenure will begin in September, marking a significant shift in her career.
