Court Upholds Niqab Driving Ban

Published: 2024-08-23

In a recent ruling, the Higher Administrative Court in Koblenz, Germany, upheld the decision to deny a Muslim woman's request to wear a niqab while driving.

The court confirmed that the ban on face coverings while driving is constitutional and serves the general safety of road traffic.

The woman had argued that her religious beliefs required her to wear the niqab, which covers the entire face except for the eyes.

However, the court stated that the ban does not prevent her from practicing her faith, as she can choose not to drive.

The court also noted that alternative measures, such as keeping a logbook, were insufficient for identifying drivers during automated traffic checks.

The ruling emphasized that the woman could still use public transportation or ride a motor scooter, where helmet laws do not conflict with the face-covering ban.
