FDP Pushes for Free Parking in Cities

Published: 2024-08-11

The Free Democratic Party (FDP) in Germany is advocating for policies to make driving in city centers more appealing.

The party plans to introduce a pro-car program that includes free parking or a nationwide parking flat rate, similar to the 49-euro train ticket.

This initiative is part of the FDP's strategy to differentiate itself from the Green Party, which it accuses of promoting an "anti-car" agenda.

FDP General Secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai emphasized the need for policies that support car owners, contrasting with the Greens' focus on alternative transportation methods.

The proposal also includes reducing the number of bicycle lanes and pedestrian zones, and implementing "green waves" to improve traffic flow and reduce emissions.

Additionally, the FDP suggests allowing supervised driving for 16-year-olds and supports motorsport as a catalyst for automotive innovation.
