Germany Approves €5B Submarine Deal

Published: 2024-12-18

Germany has approved a €5 billion deal to build four advanced U-212 CD submarines for its navy, with production led by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems.

The project, supported by a broad political coalition, also includes two additional submarines for Norway under a joint agreement.

These submarines feature enhanced sensors, extended range, and the ability to deploy missiles, addressing growing maritime threats, particularly from Russia.

The initiative is part of a €21 billion defense modernization plan, which also funds other military upgrades.

While the investment secures jobs in Wismar and boosts Germany's defense capabilities, critics argue the funds could be better spent on peace initiatives.
