Germany's Urgent Submarine Deal

Published: 2024-11-29

Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is pushing for the urgent procurement of four additional U212CD submarines, despite the country's tight budget.

This move is crucial for Germany to meet NATO's new defense requirements, which demand at least five operational submarines by 2031 to protect the alliance's northern flank.

The proposed deal, valued at 4.7 billion euros, is pending approval from the Bundestag's budget committee.

However, the total cost could rise due to anticipated modifications, potentially adding another 2.44 billion euros.

The submarines, to be built by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, are part of a joint project with Norway, which has also ordered similar vessels.

The urgency of this acquisition stems from unforeseen changes in NATO's defense planning, which were not accounted for in Germany's 2024 budget.
