In Germany, the alarming rise in violence against women has prompted political action to enhance protective measures.
The SPD in Baden-Württemberg is advocating for increased funding and resources to support women facing violence, highlighting the dire need for more women's shelters and counseling services, especially in rural areas.
A recent financial package of five million euros has been proposed to bolster these facilities, with three million earmarked for shelters and two million for innovative housing projects.
This comes in response to a significant increase in gender-based violence, as reported by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).
In 2023, there were 180,715 female victims of domestic violence, marking a 5.6% rise from the previous year.
Additionally, the number of attempted and completed femicides reached 938, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive support and prevention strategies.
The BKA's report also highlights the growing issue of digital violence, with a 25% increase in cases affecting women and girls.
As the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women approaches, calls for legislative action and societal change are intensifying.
