Rising Violence Against German Police

Published: 2024-10-14

Violence against police officers in Germany has reached unprecedented levels, with an average of 290 officers becoming victims daily, according to a recent report by the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

In 2023, there were 46,218 recorded incidents of violence against police, marking an 8% increase from the previous year.

This trend has been rising steadily since 2017. The report also highlights a rise in attacks on firefighters and emergency medical personnel, with 2,050 cases against rescue workers and 687 against firefighters.

In response, the government is proposing legal changes to allow the use of tasers by federal police and to impose harsher penalties on attackers.

The Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, emphasized the need for strict legal consequences for these acts of violence, which are often fueled by societal frustration and online incitement.
