Germany's Bundeswehr is grappling with severe challenges, as highlighted in the latest report by Parliamentary Commissioner Eva Högl.
The military faces a significant shortage of personnel, with over a quarter of positions unfilled and an aging force.
Despite increased funding and initiatives, progress remains slow, and the Bundeswehr struggles to meet its target of 203,000 soldiers by 2031. Högl supports a mandatory "society year" for young men and women to address recruitment issues, though she opposes reinstating traditional conscription.
Additionally, the Bundeswehr's infrastructure and equipment remain in dire need of upgrades, with billions required for repairs and modernization.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has called for urgent reforms, emphasizing the need for a fully operational military amidst growing security challenges.
