Bundeswehr Faces Urgent Reform Challenges

Published: 2025-03-23

The German Bundeswehr is grappling with significant challenges, including outdated infrastructure, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and a shrinking, aging workforce.

Despite increased funding, including a special defense budget, the military struggles to modernize and meet its target of 203,000 soldiers by 2031. Currently, the force has just over 181,000 personnel, with an average age rising to 34 years.

Bureaucratic hurdles have delayed critical procurements, such as drones, and have led to costly inefficiencies.

While reforms are underway, progress remains slow, likened to steering a massive tanker.

Calls for a new service model aim to attract young recruits, but the Bundeswehr's deteriorating facilities and lack of trainers pose additional obstacles.

The urgency to address these issues grows as Germany faces evolving security challenges.
