Germany's largest industrial union, IG Metall, is pushing for a 7% wage increase for 3.9 million workers in the metal and electrical industries.
The demand, announced by union leader Christiane Benner, aims to boost purchasing power and support the economy.
For apprentices, the union seeks an additional €170 per month.
Employers, represented by Gesamtmetall President Stefan Wolf, criticize the demand as excessive, warning of potential deindustrialization.
The current wage agreement expires on September 30, with negotiations set to begin mid-September.
If no agreement is reached, warning strikes could start from October 28.
