IG Metall Launches Nationwide Strikes

Published: 2024-10-29

The IG Metall union has initiated a series of nationwide warning strikes in Germany's metal and electrical industries following the expiration of the peace obligation.

These strikes, which began at midnight, are a response to stalled wage negotiations, with the union demanding a 7% pay increase over 12 months.

Employers have countered with a 3.6% increase over 27 months.

The strikes have seen participation from thousands of workers across various regions, including North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, and Thuringia, affecting major companies like Volkswagen, Siemens, and Ford.

The union argues that the proposed wage increases are necessary to combat the loss of purchasing power due to high inflation.

As negotiations continue, further strikes are planned to maintain pressure on employers.
