IG Metall, Germany's largest industrial union, has ramped up its nationwide warning strikes in the metal and electrical industries, demanding a 7% wage increase for 3.9 million workers.
The strikes, which have seen participation from around 71,000 employees across 370 companies, aim to pressure employers into better offers.
Current employer proposals include a two-stage pay rise of 1.7% and 1.9% over 27 months, starting in July 2025, which the union deems insufficient.
Major demonstrations are occurring in regions like Bavaria, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt, with significant gatherings at companies such as Linde and MAN Energy Solutions.
The union's actions follow the expiration of the peace obligation, allowing strikes to proceed without legal hindrance.
As negotiations continue, IG Metall emphasizes the urgency of addressing rising living costs for its members.
