Munich Airport has been plunged into chaos as thousands of passengers faced long queues and missed flights due to unprecedented congestion at Terminal 2. On the Day of German Unity, around 750 passengers missed their flights, with some waiting over two hours at security checks.
The airport's CEO, Jost Lammers, attributed the chaos to passengers arriving unusually early, some up to six hours before their flights, causing a bottleneck.
The situation was exacerbated by the Oktoberfest and ongoing construction work.
In response, the airport and Lufthansa have urged passengers not to arrive more than three hours before departure.
The Bavarian state government and Munich's mayor have demanded swift improvements, as the airport's reputation suffers from these operational challenges.
