Passport Delays Cause Summer Travel Woes in Germany

Published: 2024-07-07

German cities are facing significant delays in issuing passports, causing frustration among travelers as the summer holiday season begins.

The German Association of Cities reports that passport delivery times have increased from the usual two weeks to up to eight weeks due to supply issues at the Federal Printing Office.

Many citizens are caught off guard, realizing their passports won't arrive in time for their vacations.

Some resort to filing expensive express applications, potentially doubling their costs.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior acknowledges the problem, citing an unprecedented surge in passport applications since early 2024. To address the issue, the Federal Printing Office plans to increase production capacity by purchasing new machines.
