NATO Boosts Ukraine's Defense at 75th Anniversary Summit

Published: 2024-07-10

At NATO's 75th anniversary summit in Washington, Western allies reaffirmed their support for Ukraine against Russian aggression.

US President Joe Biden announced an additional Patriot air defense system for Ukraine, bringing the total to five systems when combined with contributions from Germany, Romania, the Netherlands, and Italy.

This falls short of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's request for seven systems, but allies pledged to work on further commitments.

The summit also sparked discussions on how far NATO is willing to go to defend Ukraine, with the question becoming particularly challenging for Germany.

As the alliance faces its most significant challenge since the Cold War, members must grapple with their readiness to potentially confront Putin directly.
