New German Citizenship Law Sparks Surge in Applications

Published: 2024-07-08

Germany's new citizenship law, which came into effect on June 27, 2024, has led to a significant increase in naturalization applications.

The law allows foreigners to apply for German citizenship after just five years of residency, down from the previous eight-year requirement.

However, this surge has overwhelmed local authorities, resulting in extended processing times.

Cities like Munich and Offenbach are now reporting wait times of up to 24 months for applicants.

The SPD is calling for faster processing, aiming for a six-month turnaround, while the CDU warns against rushing the process.

Despite the delays, the reform is expected to double the number of citizenship applications by year's end, potentially reshaping Germany's demographic landscape.
