Nursing Home Costs Soar in Germany, Sparking Reform Calls

Published: 2024-07-18

German nursing home residents are facing a steep increase in out-of-pocket expenses, with average monthly costs rising to €2,871 as of July 1st, 2024. This marks a €211 increase from mid-2023, despite government efforts to cap expenses.

The surge is attributed to rising energy, food, and staff costs.

Regional differences persist, with North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg being the most expensive, while Saxony-Anhalt remains the least costly.

The situation has prompted calls for urgent reform of the long-term care insurance system, with some politicians advocating for a cap on individual contributions and the introduction of a citizens' insurance scheme to ensure fair access to quality care for all.
