The cost of care in German nursing homes has surged significantly, leaving many families struggling to cope.
In 2025, the average monthly out-of-pocket expense for a first-year resident reached €2,984, up from €2,687 the previous year.
Regional disparities are stark, with Bremen residents paying the highest at €3,456, while Sachsen-Anhalt residents pay the lowest at €2,443. Experts and advocacy groups are calling for reforms, including capping personal contributions at €1,000 and shifting costs like training and infrastructure to the state.
Critics argue that the current system burdens residents unfairly, with many unable to benefit from long-term subsidies due to short life expectancies in care homes.
The rising costs are attributed to increased wages and operational expenses, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change.
