Perseid Meteor Shower Lights Up August Skies

Published: 2024-08-09

The annual Perseid meteor shower is set to dazzle stargazers this August, with its peak expected on the night of August 12th.

This celestial event occurs as Earth passes through the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, resulting in bright meteors streaking across the sky.

Ideal viewing conditions are anticipated, with clear skies and minimal moonlight enhancing visibility.

Observers can expect to see up to 30-40 meteors per hour in dark, rural areas.

Many communities are reducing light pollution to improve the spectacle, and no special equipment is needed—just a comfortable spot and patience.

The Perseids are named after the constellation Perseus, from which they appear to radiate, and are also known as "Laurentius' Tears," commemorating the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence.
