Pirmasens Halts New Ukrainian Refugee Intake

Published: 2024-08-09

The city of Pirmasens in Germany has announced a halt on accepting new Ukrainian war refugees, citing concerns over sustainable integration.

The city exceeded its intake quota by 82.6% in July, prompting the decision to redirect refugees to the nearest initial reception facility.

This measure aims to prevent overwhelming the local community and volunteers involved in integration efforts.

Exceptions will be made for refugees meeting certain integration criteria, such as having sufficient housing or employment.

While Ukrainian refugees can choose their place of residence, municipalities can refuse entry if quotas are exceeded by more than 40%.

Since February 2022, nearly 900 Ukrainians have settled in Pirmasens, a city with a population of around 41,000.
