Tensions Rise in Germany Ahead of Hamas Anniversary

Published: 2024-10-05

As the first anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel approaches, tensions are high in Germany, with numerous demonstrations taking place.

In Berlin, a pro-Palestinian rally saw around 1,000 participants, including many children, protesting against what they termed a "genocide" in Gaza.

Meanwhile, a pro-Israel demonstration also occurred, highlighting the deep divisions and rising antisemitism in the country.

The German police have reported over 3,200 antisemitic crimes this year, a significant increase from the previous year.

This surge in antisemitic incidents is linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has also led to a health crisis in Israel, as noted by the World Health Organization.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has called for peace, emphasizing the enduring trauma and displacement caused by the conflict.

As the anniversary nears, security measures in Germany are heightened, with authorities prepared for further protests and potential unrest.
