In a recent court ruling, two female activists from the climate group Letzte Generation were sentenced to prison for their involvement in a protest on the island of Sylt.
The protest, which took place in June 2023, involved spraying orange paint on a private jet at Sylt Airport, causing significant damage.
The 24-year-old activist received a seven-month sentence, while a 22-year-old was sentenced to six months, both without the possibility of parole.
The court emphasized that the damages were intentional and highlighted the availability of other means to advocate for climate action.
Additionally, two male activists were fined for their roles in the protest.
The court's decision has sparked discussions on the effectiveness and legality of such climate protests, with the activists arguing that their actions were necessary to draw attention to the urgent need for climate change mitigation.
