Berlin Activists Fined for Clock Vandalism

Published: 2024-07-26

Four climate activists from the group "Letzte Generation" have been fined for vandalizing the iconic World Clock at Alexanderplatz in Berlin.

The Berlin-Tiergarten District Court sentenced the activists, aged 22 to 28, to fines ranging from 600 to 2,100 euros for communal property damage.

The activists admitted to spraying orange paint on the clock using spray cans and modified fire extinguishers in October 2023, claiming it was a form of peaceful protest aimed at raising awareness.

The court deemed the damage, estimated at around 9,680 euros, not severe enough for harsher penalties, despite the prosecution seeking prison time.

The prosecution has since appealed the court's decision, arguing for more stringent sentences.

This case highlights the ongoing tensions between climate activism and legal repercussions in Germany.
